DEFINE YOUR “TRYOUT”<br />
Players are ABSOLUTELY PRE-SELECTED. This is NOT political.<br />
This is the BEST METHOD and most fair. Pre-Select 70-80% of<br />
your roster prior to “tryout” day. Communicate that or be ready<br />
to communicate on the spot. This reduces your need to “multifocus”.<br />
Now you are simply focused on adding the final 2-4<br />
players, 1-2 positions of need.<br />
AT THE END OF DAY 1 of TRYOUTS YOUR JOB IS TO HAVE<br />
MINIMUM 80% of your roster SIGNED & COMMITTED
KNOW YOUR STEPS of the SESSION & Execute<br />
STEP 1: Welcome “new” players, set tone for GROWTH MINDSET, SIGN IN EVERY SINGLE<br />
ATTENDING PLAYER ON EVERY SINGLE DATE (use team manager or parent whose kid WILL make<br />
the team)<br />
STEP 2: Intro your session, the plan, and expectations<br />
STEP 3: Inside the session finalize 14 of your 18 players and COMMUNICATE to those players<br />
DURING THE SESSION - not after - save your “after time” for the difficult & challenging)<br />
STEP 4: Identify & classify players not selected they will fall into two categories<br />
Category 1: Not going to make team FOR SURE w/o QUESTION<br />
Category 2: May make the team<br />
STEP 5: Communicate to the Cat 1 and Cat 2 players at session’s end 1-on-1 or grp<br />
Cat 1: “Thank you for being here. I’m going to connect you w/ coach XYZ”<br />
Cat 2: “Need further evaluation -- OR -- Depends on our numbers and I need X time”<br />
Cat 3: “We’d like you to play. Are you ready to give YOUR best effort and help others do the<br />
same?”<br />
