A Key for Long Term Student

Retention - the “Rest”

of the Family (Part 2)

by Master Toby Milroy

(continued from Volume 25 | Issue 3)

As we discussed in the first segment of this piece, when you

look around the martial arts industry with a keen eye, you start to

see some patterns. Two schools can exist in the same neighborhood,

one struggling with student retention while another boasts

impressive retention rates.

The difference often isn’t about teaching quality or even pricing.

Instead, it’s about understanding a fundamental truth of student

retention: A family that kicks together, sticks together.

Based on the best statistics I’ve been able to assemble from my

own schools, and from other successful operators, it’s easy to see

the scope of the positive impact you get when more than 1 family

member enrolls in your school. Anecdotally, it’s also pretty easy to

intuitively understand that the ‘more’ you become a ‘social hub’ for

the family, the more you become a durable part of their lives.

Last time we discussed how important and valuable it is

to get more family members ‘enrolled’ in your programs,

this time, we’ll drill into some more factors.

2. Get Them Upgraded

Once family members are in the door, create natural

pathways for deeper engagement. This could mean family

membership packages, parent-child classes, or special

seminars that encourage multiple family

members to participate in training. When

more than one family member is psychologically

committed to a longer term, more

meaningful program, you see the entire

‘family’ commitment level skyrocket.

Your ascension programs should

be AT LEAST as attractive to an adult

student as they are to the kids, if not

MORE. Layering on more advanced training opportunities that

adults will love AND can gain value from EVEN as they get older, as

well as lots of “non-physical” elements.

3. Get/Keep Them Engaged

HIGH FREQUENCY, consistent, valuable communication will

contribute in DRAMATIC ways to student and family engagement.

Implement a robust communication system that keeps families

informed about student progress, upcoming events, community

news, and that reminds them of the value and benefits they are, in

fact, receiving from your programs.

A well-designed student (and separate parent) newsletter,

pre-planned automation sequences for EACH RANK, EACH

PROGRAM, and at each stage along the progression path for you

students, active social media presence, and regular check-ins

from instructors all contribute to families feeling connected to your

school community. (We love to use ATLAS Martial Arts Software

for this.)

I like to say, “It’s OUR responsibility to remember THEM, not

their responsibility to remember us…”

4. Get Them Involved

The masterstroke of retention is transforming family members

from customers into stakeholders. Consider establishing a School

Advisory Council (SAC) that invites parents and family members to

contribute their talents:

• Marketing professionals can assist with internet marketing strategies

• Writers can contribute to newsletters

• Event planners can help organize tournaments and demonstrations

• Business professionals can advise on growth opportunities

When family members invest their time and talents, they develop

ownership in your school’s success.

MASTERING MODERN BJJ

Life Lessons & How To

Finish Strong (Part 1)

by Master Carlos Machado

Jiu-Jitsu is a journey that involves many challenges and opportunities. It is not only

a test of your physical skills, but also of your mental and emotional ones. You have

to face different situations and opponents, and find the best way to overcome them.

Sometimes, you may start strong, but end up losing. Other times, you may start weak,

but end up winning. What makes the difference?

The Beginning Days

I still remember the beginning days, when I was a white belt in

Brazil, learning from my uncle Helio Gracie, my cousin Rolls Gracie,

and later from my cousin Carlos Gracie Junior. I was eager to learn

and improve, but I also faced many difficulties and frustrations.

I lacked knowledge and experience, which made me

struggle against more experienced teammates. I did

not have a clear vision of the jiu-jitsu chess game,

which made me act impulsively or passively. I did

not have a solid strategy, which made me vulnerable

to mistakes or surprises.

I realized that I had to know myself and my opponent

better, as Sun Tzu said in his “Art of War”. I had

to learn the mechanics of each technique,

and how to apply them in different scenarios.

I had to learn how to anticipate

and prepare for possible outcomes,

and how to adapt and improvise

when things changed. I had to

learn how to connect and transition

between techniques, and

how to create opportunities or

exploit openings.

I also realized that I had to

be patient and consistent in my training. I had to practice the drills

over and over again, until they became second nature. I had to

maintain the pace and maximize the time on the mat. I had to train

with different partners and levels of resistance. I had to challenge

myself and push my limits.

The Mirror Strategy

One of the strategies that helped me a lot in my early days

was the mirror strategy. This strategy consists of emulating good

mechanics from someone who performs a technique well. It could

be your instructor, your teammate, or even your opponent. You

observe how they do it, and then you try to copy it as closely as

possible. You pay attention to

the details, such as the grip,

the angle, the leverage, the

timing, and the movement.

The mirror strategy

will help you improve

your technique and

make it more effective

and efficient. You will also

learn from different sources

and perspectives, which will enrich

your repertoire and options.

MASTER CARLOS MACHADO is one of the pioneers of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the United States of America.

Currently a Coral Belt, and promoted to Black Belt by Carlos Gracie Junior, Carlos Machado came to the USA in the early

1990’s with his brothers where they formed the RCJ Machado Jiu Jitsu Association, one of the strongest & growing BJJ

organizations in the world today.

Karate Kid: Legends

– A Modern Underdog Tale with Big

Opportunities for Your Dojo

Martial arts school owners,

get ready — Karate

Kid: Legends isn’t

just another nostalgic reboot;

it’s a valuable opportunity waiting

to be utilized for your school.

Whether you’re looking for fresh

inspiration, lead generating

campaigns, or a new angle for

improving student retention, this

new chapter in the iconic franchise

delivers plenty of punch

both onscreen and off.

Following the Cobra Kai series

and decades after the original

trilogy, Legends introduces

a fresh face to the franchise: Li

Fong, a kung fu student forced

to start over in New York City after

tragedy uproots his life. Played with endearing charisma by Ben

Wang, Li brings a new energy and heart to the familiar “bullied kid

finds confidence through martial arts” storyline — one that school

owners know is still as relevant today as it was in 1984.

But here’s where things get interesting for you: the film not

only bridges the worlds of kung fu and karate through the return

of Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han and Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso, it

philosophically unites them as branches of the same tree — a powerful

metaphor for martial arts unity. What better message to share

with your students and prospective students?

Some Practical Tactics for Your School:

1. Host a Movie Night (or Two):

With the film now in theaters and soon to stream, plan a schoolwide

event for a movie night promotion with a local theater or

organize an in-house “Karate Kid Legends Night” once the movie

is available to stream. Encourage students to bring friends. Offer

popcorn, raffle prizes, and follow it up with a short demo or an intro

class sign-up table.

2. Teach the Philosophy:

Li’s journey is packed with teachable moments — not just

kicks and punches, but lessons on perseverance, respect, and

cultural understanding. Use scenes from the movie to spark

classroom discussions with themes like resilience, mentorship,

and adaptability.

3. Run a Cross-Style Challenge:

Capitalize on the film’s core message by inviting students to

explore styles outside their own. Whether it’s a basic kung fu

technique for karate students or vice versa, the theme of mutual

respect and exploration can create excitement and appreciation

across disciplines.

4. Leverage the Legacy in Marketing:

Promote your school by drawing connections to the Karate

Kid lineage. Consider social posts like, “What does it mean to be

a legend? Find out in our dojo. Start your own journey today.” Or

position your school as part of the timeless tradition of martial arts

mentorship.

5. Parent & Student Conversations:

This is a rare PG-rated martial arts movie with emotional depth

— a perfect bridge for meaningful parent-student conversations.

Encourage families to watch it together, and follow up with an

email featuring reflection questions or journal prompts.

Karate Kid: Legends may stumble in its pacing toward the end,

but it delivers what truly matters: heart, action, and purpose. It gives

us a new hero in Li Fong and reminds us why martial arts — in all its

forms — continues to transform lives. So don’t just watch it. Use it.

Let it become a launching pad for your next great campaign, your

next retention boost, or even your next black belt's origin story.

The message is clear: The legend lives on — and it’s time your

school becomes part of it.

5 Simple Injury Prevention

Strategies to Protect Your Students,

School, and Reputation

Running a successful martial arts school isn’t just about teaching

great technique—it’s also about keeping your students

safe. Injuries not only sideline students and hurt retention,

they can also impact your reputation, increase liability, and even

lead to burnout among your instructors. The good news is that

most martial arts injuries are preventable.

With any style you face common risks—sprains, strains, bruises,

cuts, and the occasional more serious injury like fractures or

concussions. As school owners, one of your responsibilities is to

create an environment where students train smart, stay safe, and

come back for more.

Here are five practical ways to make injury prevention part of

your everyday school culture:

1. Make Prep Work Part of the Program

Encourage every student to get a physical, especially adults or

teens joining after a long time away from activity. See if you can

partner with a local chiropractor or sports medicine clinic and offer

discounted sports physicals as part of your sign-up process.

Build cardio and conditioning into your curriculum. Students

who are fatigued are far more likely to make mistakes that lead to

injury. Don’t rush into flashy techniques or tournament prep until

they’ve built up the physical foundation. Include dynamic warm-ups

and cool-down stretches in every class—not just competition prep.

2. Double Down on Equipment and Environment

Invest in quality mats and inspect them regularly. A smooth fall

today can prevent a broken wrist tomorrow. Protective gear should

be mandatory for sparring, including mouthguards, headgear,

groin cups, and hand wraps. If you run striking-heavy programs,

consider hosting a workshop on proper wrap technique or glove

fit—it’s shocking how many students do it wrong.

Also, train your staff to be mindful of surroundings. Split large

classes into pods and space them out. Accidental collisions from

another student’s roundhouse kick are far too common—and

completely avoidable.

3. Teach Technique, Not Just Toughness

Many injuries happen not because students are trying something

hard, but because they’re doing something basic the wrong

way. Breakfalls, rolls, and how to tap out safely should be drilled

often and early—especially in grappling-based arts.

Ensure instructors always supervise new techniques. Encourage

students to ask questions before attempting unfamiliar movements,

and have a culture where tapping out is seen as a smart

move, not a weak one.

4. Train Your Staff for the Unexpected

It’s not a matter of if someone gets hurt—it’s when. Have a basic

first aid kit on hand and make sure all instructors and assistants

are trained in handling minor injuries. Develop a clear protocol for

contacting emergency services if needed.

Create an “Incident Report” system so every injury, even a minor

one, is documented. This not only protects your school legally

but also helps you spot patterns and adjust training accordingly.

5. Return to the Mat Safely

Injuries don’t end when the student walks out the door. Have

a firm “return to play” policy. No student should rejoin class after

a concussion, dislocation, or major sprain without clearance.

Educate parents about this too. Rushing recovery is a fast track to

long-term problems—and lost students.

Martial arts are about pushing limits—but they’re also about respect,

and that includes respecting the body. By prioritizing injury

prevention, you’re not just protecting your students—you’re protecting

your business. A safe school is a growing school. Parents

notice it. Students appreciate it. And your instructors thrive in it.

capture training, allowing it to execute complex combinations—straight

punches, hooks, front kicks, and evasive

maneuvers—with uncanny realism. These machines are teleoperated

and trainable via motion sensors, voice commands, and

algorithm-based learning. In a few short years, we could see

similar technologies integrated into martial arts instruction as

advanced sparring aids, digital training partners, or even virtual

coach assistants.

Imagine offering students the chance to train against robotic

opponents that mimic real fighters’ timing, rhythm, and technique.

It’s not far-fetched. It’s the natural progression of AI and robotics

colliding with sport.

The Tech-Driven Martial Arts School

Forward-thinking school owners should view this as more than

a gimmick. Just as pads, bags, and digital curriculum tools modernized

the traditional dojo, robotics and motion-capture feedback

systems could be the next revolution. Consider the appeal this

holds for younger students raised on gaming, VR, and AI—robot

sparring matches could become the ultimate martial arts engagement

tool.

A New Frontier for Competition and Entertainment

Whether you’re running demo teams, planning in-house tournaments,

or seeking to energize your local community, robotic exhibitions

could soon become a viable and exciting option. Think of the

crowd-drawing power of a “robot vs. human” match at your next

black belt extravaganza or open house.

Final Thoughts

While Unitree’s robot fighters are still controlled by

humans and prone to the occasional stumble—one

fell at the start of a recent robot marathon—they are

advancing rapidly. What we’re witnessing is not the

replacement of martial artists, but the emergence of

a new set of tools to enhance martial arts education,

engagement, and entertainment.

For martial arts school owners willing to embrace

innovation, the future isn’t just bright—it might be

robotic.

Stay ahead. Stay adaptable. The next generation of

martial artists is already watching—and they love what

they see.

INDUSTRY INNOVATIONS

6 Reasons Why Martial Arts School

Owners Should Prioritize Video

Marketing Now More Than Ever (Pt 1)

Showcase:

• Belt promotions

• Kids breaking boards

• Quick tips on confidence or bullying

• Staff high-fiving students

• A Parent Night Out in full swing

These moments capture the energy

and value of your program—while riding

the wave of algorithmic reach. The result?

More eyeballs, more followers, and more

leads.

In an age where attention is currency, video is still the king of

content—especially for martial arts school owners looking to

dominate their local market, boost enrollments, and build a

brand that parents trust and kids admire.

Sure, marketing trends come and go. TikTok surges, Instagram updates

its algorithm, Facebook changes its ad manager again. But one

thing remains constant: video consistently outperforms every other

content format when it comes to engagement, reach, and conversion.

If you’re a martial arts school owner looking to grow, ignoring video

isn’t just a missed opportunity—it’s a competitive disadvantage.

3. Video Ads Outperform Static

Images Every Time

Thinking about running paid ads?

Great—just don’t waste money on a

boring flyer graphic. A simple 30-second

video ad featuring your students in action

can generate 2–5x more engagement

than image-based ads.

Use video to highlight a special offer

(like a back-to-school or summer trial), then layer in voiceover, text

overlays, and a call to action. When your audience sees the impact

of martial arts on real kids, the conversion rate climbs.

(Continued Next Issue)

1. Video Builds Trust Faster Than Any Other Medium

Parents don’t enroll their kids into martial arts programs lightly.

They’re looking for safety, leadership, discipline, and community.

A well-crafted video allows them to see and feel your school’s environment

before stepping foot through the door. That emotional

connection builds trust—fast.

Whether it’s a 60-second walkthrough of your school, a testimonial

from a smiling parent, or footage of kids earning stripes

with pride, video removes doubt and replaces it with desire.

2. Short-Form Video Is Your Secret Weapon for Visibility

Thanks to platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube

Shorts, short-form video is the new gateway to attention. These

quick, punchy clips are ideal for martial arts schools.

Strengthening Digital Safety in Your

Martial Arts School (Part 2)

Continued from last issue

Why Digital Safety Matters for Martial Arts Schools

As martial arts school owners, we’re not just responsible for

teaching self-defense—we also need to protect our students and

their families online. From safeguarding student data to preventing

misinformation about our programs, digital security is crucial in

today’s tech-driven world.

Recently, the World Economic Forum released The Intervention

Journey: A Roadmap to Effective Digital Safety Measures, a guide

to help businesses navigate online risks. Let’s explore how its fourstep

framework applies to your martial arts school and how you

can use it to strengthen trust with your community.

3. Implementation – Integrating Digital Safety with

Your School’s Brand

Your digital safety strategy should align with your overall brand

and mission. Consider:

• Using secure, reputable platforms for student communication

(e.g., private Facebook groups, dedicated member portals).

• Educating parents on safe online interactions, such as protecting

their child’s identity in social media posts.

Example: If you use a messaging app to communicate with

parents, ensure it has end-to-end encryption to prevent hacking

attempts.

4. Feedback & Transparency – Continual Monitoring

and Improvement

Ongoing digital safety efforts are essential. Use tools like automated

alerts to detect suspicious activity and regularly audit your

digital systems. Be transparent with parents about the steps you’re

taking to protect their children’s information.

Example: If a phishing scam targets your school’s email, immediately

inform parents, advise them on what to do, and implement

stronger security measures.

By proactively managing digital safety, martial arts school owners

can foster trust and confidence while protecting their business

from cyber threats.

How AI Can Strengthen Security and

Efficiency in Your Martial Arts School

AI-Powered Cybersecurity

– A Game-Changer for Martial Arts Businesses

With cyberattacks increasing in complexity, even small businesses

like martial arts schools must stay vigilant. Microsoft

recently introduced AI-powered cybersecurity tools designed to

detect hacking attempts, prevent phishing scams, and analyze

cyber threats before they cause harm. Here’s how AI can benefit

your school.

AI-Powered Email Security

– Stopping Scams Before They Reach You

Cybercriminals often target small businesses with phishing

emails disguised as official messages from banks or vendors. AI cybersecurity

tools can automatically detect and block these threats.

Example: If you receive an email pretending to be from your billing

software asking for login credentials, an AI-powered filter can

flag it as a scam before you open it, preventing data theft.

AI in Payment and Student Management Systems

Many martial arts schools use online booking and payment

systems. AI can help:

• Detect fraudulent transactions and unusual account activity.

• Automate reminders for unpaid tuition, reducing missed payments.

Example: If a student’s billing information is used in multiple locations

within minutes, AI can flag it as suspicious, preventing fraud.

Protecting Student Data with AI

As schools collect more digital data (enrollments, attendance

records, progress tracking), AI can:

• Ensure compliance with data protection laws.

• Automatically encrypt sensitive student information.

Example: If a former employee tries to access old student

records, AI security systems can recognize unauthorized login attempts

and block access.

The Future of AI in Martial Arts

School Management

AI isn’t just for cybersecurity—it can help automate scheduling,

enhance digital marketing, and even analyze student progress.

By embracing AI-driven tools, martial arts school owners

can streamline operations while keeping student and business

data secure.

Final Thoughts

Digital safety and AI-powered security aren’t just for big corporations—they’re

essential for martial arts school owners who want to

protect their students, streamline operations, and build trust in the

community. By staying proactive, you can safeguard your school’s

future in an increasingly digital world.

Would you like a more detailed breakdown of AI-powered tools

for marketing and student engagement? Let me know, and we can

dive deeper into those areas!

A New Era Begins:

Martial Arts History Museum

Celebrates Official Grand

Opening in Glendale

Glendale, CA — The drums roared, lions danced, and history came alive as the Martial

Arts History Museum celebrated its official grand opening in the heart of Glendale,

California. Although its doors have been open for some time, it was the unveiling of its

iconic new signage that signaled the true beginning—a moment a full year in the making.

More than 150 guests filled the streets as a traditional Chinese

Lion Dance led a vibrant procession to the entrance, where young

martial artists gave thrilling demonstrations that drew cheers and

awe. What began as a dream has now transformed into a living

monument of culture, resilience, and legacy.

Now celebrating its 26th year, the Martial Arts History Museum

stands proudly as the only museum of its kind in the world—a

place where centuries of tradition meet modern appreciation.

Founded by 60-year martial arts veteran and historian Michael

Matsuda, the museum is more than a collection of artifacts; it is a

heartbeat for a global community.

“This is a great day for martial artists everywhere,” said

Matsuda. “This museum gives our community a home. An official

hall of fame. A voice. Without it, so much of our rich history would

simply disappear.”

The opening brought together an impressive lineup of guests,

including martial arts stars Cynthia Rothrock, Michelle Manu, Carrie

Ogawa-Wong and Art Camacho, alongside city dignitaries like

former Glendale Mayor Paula Devine, Councilmembers Daniel

Brotman and Vartan Gharpetian, and Noriko Yokota, assistant to

the Consul General of Japan.

Inside the museum, visitors discovered two brand-new

cultural exhibits—Armenian and Native American sections—further

expanding the museum’s diverse representation of global

martial traditions. On display were the legendary uniforms

of martial arts pioneers: Jhoon

Rhee, the father of American

Tae Kwon Do; Ed Parker, the

founder of American

Kenpo; and

Steve Sanders

Muhammad,

a tournament

champion and key

figure in the Black

Karate.

The celebration

reached its peak with a

ribbon-cutting ceremony

led by the museum’s

Funakoshi Award winners:

Art Camacho, Robin Price,

Lady Lallaine Reed, David

Reed, and Jacquelyn Egger—individuals

recognized not only for

their mastery of the arts but for

their enduring contributions to the

museum.

The Martial Arts History Museum

is not just a space—it’s a sanctuary

of stories, spirit, and strength. And

now, it’s officially open to inspire the

next generation.

MANAGEMENT

AMS Liberates Martial Arts

School Owners From

Time Consuming Office Work

You’re an instructor, a mentor, a leader. You didn’t open your martial arts school to

become a full-time accountant, marketer, tech support agent, or collections manager.

But somehow, your day gets swallowed up by reconciling accounts, chasing down

late payments, troubleshooting website issues, juggling marketing posts, and

managing a pile of administrative tasks that never seem to end.

The question is: how much time are you actually spending on

the mat—doing what you love and what you’re best at? That’s

where AMS (Amerinational Management Services) steps in. As a

true full-service solution built specifically for martial arts schools,

AMS takes the weight of operations off your shoulders so you can

focus on developing champions, building culture, and growing

your legacy—not spreadsheets.

Whether it’s automating your tuition billing, streamlining

student management through software, handling your

lead-generating website, or giving you professional

marketing tools and support, AMS is

your back-office dream team. They don’t

just offer software—they offer freedom.

Freedom to teach. Freedom to scale.

Freedom to love your business again.

Stress-Free Tuition Billing

AMS’s Full‐Service Tuition Billing is

more than just a payment solution—it’s

peace of mind. Imagine never having to

send another awkward follow-up email

about a late payment, never worrying about

declined cards, missed dues, or uncomfortable

parent conversations again. With AMS, there are

no dunning emails, no chasing students for money, no

surprises, and absolutely no hidden fees. Their team handles

all the billing, accounting, and collections for you—professionally,

respectfully, and in full compliance with FDCPA regulations.

AMS doesn’t take a cookie-cutter approach either. Their system

is fully customizable to match the tone and needs of your school—

whether you run traditional programs, competitive teams, or afterschool

pick-up. They follow up on past-due accounts with tact,

professionalism, and persistence, helping you reduce drop-offs

and preserve relationships while keeping your cash flow strong.

The result? You reclaim hours every week that can now go

toward teaching, mentoring, and enrolling new students instead of

bookkeeping. Plus, with reliable income and fewer financial interruptions,

you gain a stronger, more stable foundation to grow your

school—confident that AMS has your back.

Merchant Accounts & Pro Shop Support

From monthly tuition payments to belt testing fees, tournament

registrations, summer camps, and pro shop

purchases, AMS merchant accounts are purposebuilt

to meet the unique financial needs of

martial arts schools. Unlike generic payment

processors, AMS understands the

rhythms of your business and offers a

flexible, martial arts-specific solution

that helps you streamline revenue collection

without the headaches.

Whether you prefer manual control

or automated batching, AMS gives

you the tools to process payments your

way. Set up recurring billing for memberships,

take one-time payments for events

and gear, and offer on-the-spot refunds with

ease—all while maintaining full transparency

through detailed reporting dashboards that keep you

in the know.

And when it comes to security, AMS doesn’t cut corners. Their

merchant services are PCI-compliant and Trustwave-monitored,

ensuring every transaction is encrypted, protected, and backed by

rock-solid infrastructure. That means you and your members are

fully protected, and your reputation stays intact.

In short, AMS makes your school’s financial engine run smoother,

safer, and smarter—so you can focus less on transactions and

more on transformation.

presenting

the Ninja

‘Five Elements’ system

Author Stephen K. Hayes presents the Ninja "Five Elements" system to explain fundamental aspects of self-defense.

According to Japanese Buddhist belief, human nature is connected to the natural world and is made up of five elements. By

understanding that connection, essential responses to any threat become clear:

EARTH—Remain grounded in your thinking and footing to repel attempts to distract or deceive you

WATER—Shift, angle and move fluidly to tactically confuse attackers and put them off balance

FIRE—See where a situation is going as it develops and intercept it at the critical moment

WIND—Stay light on your feet and move nimbly to evade and escape attempts to pin you down

VOID—Control a fight's direction by changing dynamics to confuse your attacker

“Ninja Fighting Techniques” explains how the five elements can

become automatic, unconscious responses for fighters who

train the Ninja way. Through study and practice they become

instinctive, effectively employed precisely when you need them

without thinking.

The advantage of Ninja teachings over other martial disciplines

is that, in addition to providing physical combat methods, they

teach you to develop a better understanding of human behavior

and psychology as well as "real-time" awareness of your

surroundings — invaluable in any combat and street fighting

situation.

With over 300 full-color photographs and detailed step-by-step

instructions, this book shows you how the ancient self-defense

techniques developed by the Ninja are still unsurpassed today!

One Heart for Taekwondo:

A Historic Celebration at the

White House

To Our Proud Taekwondo Family,

Dear Taekwondo Practitioners and Friends,

It is with heartfelt pride and deep emotion that I write to you today. On May 18, 2025, we celebrated the 72nd

anniversary of the ROK-U.S. alliance with the Taekwondo Hanmadang Festival held on the front lawn of the White

House in Washington, D.C. Under the theme of “One Heart for Korea and the United States” and “One Heart for

Taekwondo Practitioners,” the event was a truly unforgettable celebration filled with joy and inspiration.

I extend my sincere gratitude to Kukkiwon President Lee Dong-seop and all the distinguished guests from

Korea and abroad, the Kukkiwon Demonstration Team, and all those who made the effort to attend from across

the U.S., despite your busy schedules. I also want to thank the many dojang members who participated under the

leadership of their instructors—your presence made this event deeply meaningful.

With more than 2,000 Taekwondo practitioners in attendance, this festival far exceeded expectations—not

just in numbers, but in spirit. The energy and passion we shared lit up the White House lawn and filled every

heart with pride and emotion. Together, we created a powerful and historic moment that reaffirmed the honor

and meaning of being a Taekwondo practitioner.

This remarkable achievement was only possible because of your dedication and hard work. I am especially

grateful to the instructors, students, parents, and volunteers who stood firm and committed, even amid imperfect

preparations. Your dedication made this event a resounding success. Most of all, we were once again reminded

that Taekwondo is more than a sport—it is a global culture and a shared spirit that transcends nationality, language,

and age.

Rooted in the philosophy of “Overcome yourself and contribute to the world,” Taekwondo offers a path of

personal growth and communal harmony through disciplined training. This festival was a vivid expression of that

philosophy, showing the world the depth and value of Taekwondo. From its beginnings as a traditional Korean

martial art, Taekwondo has become a beloved Olympic sport and an international cultural treasure. The enthusiasm

and commitment shown at this event reaffirmed its role as a spiritual and cultural pillar worldwide.

The Hanmadang Festival, hosted by Kukkiwon and organized by the Washington, D.C.–Virginia branch,

received enthusiastic support from the U.S. government and strong media coverage—rekindling global attention

toward Taekwondo. This was not just a memorable event, but a significant milestone on our shared path forward.

Dear Taekwondo Family,

Our journey does not end here—it’s only the beginning of greater things to come. Our next step is the 2025

Taekwondo Hanmadang, to be held from July 17–19 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Los Angeles. I believe

the unity, excitement, and passion we created in Washington will grow even stronger in Anaheim.

As a fellow Taekwondo practitioner and participant in this incredible event, I promise to continue doing my

utmost to help elevate Taekwondo on the global stage.

Once again, I offer my deepest thanks to everyone who contributed to this festival. I am especially moved by

the hard work and heartfelt effort of the Washington D.C.–Virginia branch leadership and staff, who supported

this event despite the many demands of running their schools.

May health, peace, and continued growth be with you, your families, your dojangs, and your Taekwondo journey.

Thank you.

US Open ISKA World Championships:

Shatters All Attendance Records

in 2025

The US Open: A Masterclass in Martial Arts

Event Evolution and Brand Power

What began in 1973 as a regional tournament—the East Coast

Grand Nationals—has grown into one of the world’s most prestigious

martial arts events: the US Open ISKA World Martial Arts

Championships, commonly known as “The Open.” For martial arts

school owners, the story of the US Open is more than a historical

recap—it’s a blueprint for strategic growth, brand building, and

global impact.

From Humble Beginnings to

Nationwide Appeal

Founded by USKA members Ted

and Kim Kresge, the original event

was hosted annually in St. Petersburg,

Florida. With expert promotion

and an inclusive, style-neutral approach,

the Kresges quickly positioned

their tournament as a national

draw. This openness—welcoming all

styles and affiliations—was a visionary

move, rebranding the tournament

as the “US Open” in 1979. It was a

valuable early lesson in scalability:

inclusion drives expansion.

By 1981, the event caught the attention

of martial arts entrepreneur Charles

U.S. Open Operators: Mike Sawyer, Cory Schafer, Mike McCoy

Brown, and soon after, it transitioned to the leadership of Mike

Sawyer and Mike McCoy of Pro-Kick Productions (PKP)—a gamechanging

moment in the event’s evolution.

Strategic Partnerships, Smart Relocation, and

Broadcast Brilliance

Sawyer and McCoy relocated the tournament to Orlando’s new

Orange County Civic Center, positioning it at the heart of Florida’s

growing entertainment corridor. They

quickly leveraged their industry relationships

to secure ESPN broadcast coverage,

launching the now-iconic “Night of

Champions” finals.

This move wasn’t just about visibility—it

was about credibility. As

ESPN aired both the martial arts

and PKA kickboxing events, the US

Open became a televised spectacle,

introducing millions to sport karate

and boosting the perceived value of

martial arts competition.

Takeaway for school owners: Aligning

your brand with trusted platforms—

whether through local media or social

proof—can dramatically boost your

credibility and enrollment.

Media Attention and the Power of Narrative

In 1985, Sports Illustrated assigned veteran combat sports

journalist Pat Putnam to cover the US Open. The resulting feature,

timed with ESPN’s broadcast, created a media trifecta: print, TV,

and grassroots buzz. The event’s profile soared.

School owners can learn from this media synergy: a compelling

story shared across multiple channels attracts students, supporters,

and sponsors.

Growth Through Venue Innovation and Family-

Centered Focus

The US Open later moved to Daytona Beach’s brand-new Ocean

Center, gaining size and visibility, before returning to Orlando’s

growing convention center. In 1995, relocating to the Twin Towers

Hotel near Disney and Universal Studios signaled a new era: one

that emphasized family participation and youth engagement.

With the introduction of youth divisions for all ranks and ages,

the Open positioned itself as more than a competition—it became

a family experience.

Key insight: Building programs that engage entire families can

deepen loyalty, increase retention, and multiply referrals.

The ISKA Era: Turning Titles Into Global

Recognition

By 1998, the US Open became the official home of the ISKA

Sport Karate World Championships. Winners of the top divisions

weren’t just champions of an event—they were crowned ISKA

World Champions, elevating the prestige and competitive stakes.

This same year also saw the creation of the ISKA Breaking Division,

formalizing the discipline of martial arts breaking and adding

high-drama spectacle with events like Power Breaking and

Creative Breaking. These innovations reinvigorated audience

excitement and gave competitors new platforms for excellence.

Lesson for school owners: Evolve your curriculum and events to

keep students inspired. Innovation sustains excitement and drives

media attention.

Power breaking is one of the most popular events

for spectators and the ESPN audience

The ESPN Legacy: A Marketing Milestone

Perhaps one of the most enduring partnerships in martial arts history is

PKP’s broadcast agreement with ESPN. Over 22 years of continuous coverage,

the US Open reached global audiences via ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, and

now ESPN+. This visibility turned The Open into a household name across

six continents.

Actionable takeaway: Video—

especially when broadcast or

streamed—remains the most

powerful tool to showcase your

students, your culture, and your

brand.

Corporate Sponsorship and

the Disney Era

In 1998, the US Open secured a long-term

sponsorship with John Paul Mitchell Systems,

followed by an unprecedented opportunity: an

invitation to host the tournament on Walt Disney World

property.

The move to Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in 1999 provided

unmatched prestige and amenities, elevating the tournament

to a world-class, family-centered experience. For martial arts

schools, this move reinforced a central truth: location and atmosphere

matter—both in running your school and hosting events.

The Global Stage Today

Now welcoming participants from over 40 countries across six

continents, The US Open is a global celebration of martial arts. For

school owners, it’s more than an event—it’s a marketing opportunity,

a cultural touchstone, and a recruiting tool for elite athletes and passionate

beginners alike.

What This Means for You

The US Open’s evolution offers martial arts school owners a

powerful case study in:

• Brand building through consistency and vision

• Leveraging media and partnerships for exponential growth

• Creating inclusive and family-friendly offerings

• Staying ahead of the curve through innovation and strategic

reinvention

Whether you’re running a neighborhood dojo or building a

regional franchise, the lessons from the US Open can help you

elevate your school, expand your reach, and leave a lasting

legacy in the martial arts world.

Are you looking for ways to inspire your martial arts students

and showcase the pinnacle of competitive excellence? The US Open ISKA

World Championships represents the ultimate destination for serious martial

artists and school owners who want to witness world-class competition. This

premier event returns to ESPN+ in 2025, offering unprecedented exposure

and opportunities for the entire martial arts community.

As a martial arts school owner, you understand the importance of motivation

and goal-setting for your students. The US Open ISKA World Championships

provides the perfect example of what dedication, training, and perseverance

Kali Kruzada: Filipino Martial

Arts for the Real World

Kuntaw Kali Kruzada in Red Bank, New Jersey stands as an intriguing school of martial

arts and a staple of personal protection in its community. Since its establishment in

2011, this martial arts academy, headed up by the esteemed Rich Acosta, has been the

epitome of dedication, discipline, and authenticity.

Kuntaw Kali Kruzada is a great resource for adults seeking to

immerse themselves in the profound teachings of Filipino Martial

Arts. With a curriculum encompassing Kali Arnis, Eskrima, Kuntaw,

and Japanese Jujutsu, the academy goes beyond physical combat,

thereby producing

a deeper understanding

of self-defense. A unique

aspect of the academy’s

approach is its focus on

preparing individuals to

face real-life situations,

often involving multiple

At the center of the

Black Belt. Rich’s journey

through martial arts

started in 1996, when he

embarked on the path

of teaching the Filipino

Martial Arts. His pursuit led him to the Philippines, where he received

private tutelage from top instructors in this discipline. From

members of elite military units to New York’s finest, Rich’s expertise

has influenced a diverse array of professionals. His three-time

induction into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame stands as a testament

to his prowess.

Rich’s accomplishments also extend beyond his personal

journey. As the Director of New York for Sword Stick Society

When asked about his triumphs, Rich humbly mentions certifying

remarkable feat over the

past decade. As for his

attributes his prominence

to securing one of the

of his dedication to

bringing the rich heritage

of Filipino Martial Arts to a

Looking into the future,

Rich envisions collaborating

with other martial arts

organizations to amplify

the reach of his instructor

is clear: to create a global

Kuntaw Kali Kruzada strives to bridge the gap between ancient

techniques and contemporary self-defense needs. As its influence

continues to ripple, one can’t help but feel excited for the future it

holds in shaping its community through the martial arts.

THE MILLIONAIRE SMARTS COACH

Discover Entrepreneurial

Independence:

Rewrite Your Destiny

By Lee Milteer

Beneath the surface of every entrepreneur’s heart lies an insatiable hunger for one

thing above all else – freedom.

Like my fellow business adventurers, I HATE the thought of

anyone dictating my actions or commandeering my precious

time. My roots are firmly planted in a “do whatever it takes” environment,

nurtured on the vast expanse of a ranch and farm.

Independence was our creed, our way of life.

Such an upbringing, undeniably a blessing, laid the bedrock

for my journey as a successful business owner.

Embracing inner independence taught me the

invaluable lesson of taking full ownership of

my outcomes, whether they brought triumph

or tribulation. It granted me resilience and

an unyielding spirit to thrive amidst the

ever-shifting tides of reality.

We can’t rewind the clock and

rewrite the scripts in our minds left by

family, society, or culture.

Yet, today, we possess the

power to rewire our brains, crafting

ourselves into better

decision-makers and

more astute actors in

the grand play of life.

The key lies in

controlling the information

we allow into

our minds and being

selective about who

holds sway over us.

Here are some fundamental truths to bear in mind:

1. Your mind is the engine propelling your life forward. It

falls upon you to curate the quality of information that feeds

your mind. Failure to do so renders you a hapless victim of old

thinking and a reality you never signed up for.

2. Profitable and triumphant business leaders focus on

their goals, seek unbiased counsel, and energize their daily

lives through learning and action. Cultivate this independence

in all aspects of your life by trusting your instincts, and building

resources for your desired lifestyle.

3. Independent thinkers don’t resist change; they seize

opportunities within evolving landscapes. They’re not easily

swayed by distractions or shiny novelties that diverge from

their core competencies.

4. Many are conditioned to react to external circumstances.

This victim mentality binds you to the ebb and flow of the

world, leading to a cascade of negativity. Remember this: you

may not control the outside world, but your thoughts and actions

remain firmly within your grasp.

5. To be the captain of your own ship, you must master

your inner dialogue. Complaining and lamenting setbacks is

the path of the victim. True freedom lies in choosing where to

direct your focus. Not every endeavor yields success, but each

action imparts knowledge. You don’t fail when you learn.

In the end, true independence isn’t merely an aspiration

– it’s a way of life, a commitment to shaping your destiny and

thriving in the face of change.

TEAMWORK

Qualities of a Good

Martial Arts Instructor

by Hanshi Dave Kovar

A martial arts instructor should be the embodiment of the benefits of long-term training,

not only while on the mat or in the school, but also day in and day out outside of the

school and in their community. This is a tall order, and a great responsibility for us all.

Here are just some of the most important attributes of

outstanding instructors...

Knowledge: Knowledge in the area of instruction is a must. An

instructor must be informative; however, no matter how informative

the material is, the class is only as good as the instructor’s attitude

on that given day. This brings us to the second quality which is...

Enthusiasm: Enthusiasm is a must. Enthusiasm is not taught,

it’s caught. If you are not feeling enthusiastic, “FAKE

IT ‘TIL YOU MAKE IT.” As instructors, we’re not

allowed to have a bad day in front of our students.

They look to us to be the one setting

the tone, and to be the dependably positive

force when they have a rough day.

Personability: The ideal martial arts instructor enjoys working

with people, especially children. She doesn’t just tolerate children,

she really enjoys them. Make sure your students know that

you know they’re there and that they’re valued.

“Whatever-it-takes” attitude: The ideal martial arts instructor

is always willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, from

mopping the bathrooms to taking some extra time with a struggling

student.

There are of course many more qualities that make up a

top-quality instructor, and even this list is no easy task to live

up to. It’s important to remember though: we are role models,

and our students look to us for direction. We must always lead

by example.

HANSHI DAVE KOVAR is an 8th degree black belt and recognized as the “Trainer of Trainers.” Hanshi

Dave Kovar is an internationally acclaimed instructor with black belt degrees in ten different martial arts styles. His

systems have been implemented in hundreds of schools around the US.

AFTER SCHOOL EXCELLENCE

What Goes In:

Grading Your School’s Snacks

by Grandmaster Mike Bugg

Any after school program worth its salt will provide some kind of snacks for its

students (some states even require this by law).

You may be providing snacks out of the kindness of your heart,

or you may be making a modest profit from selling Snickers after

your intense workouts are over. Either way, what you stock is

important for a few reasons: 1) Showing parents you have the right

kind of snacks at your school is just another smart way to win them

over to joining (or staying in) your program. 2) The proper snacks

can give your students the energy they need to perform harder

and longer in your program. This raises your school’s performance

and increases the quality of your school. Both of these are

desirable outcomes. So, what are the “right snacks” for your little

munchers? See if you can determine which of the following items

are good and which are bad for your students.

Water: Starting off with a freebie. Make sure your

students drink it regularly and often. It’s essential to

healthy and hydrated students. Yes, yes, yes!

Candy: This one is so easy that you might

be wondering why it’s even on the list. Well, in

spite of themselves, most people who work

with kids give them a lot of candy without even

realizing it. Candy is always prepackaged and

kids are always asking for it, so before you

know it, you might be feeding your kids two or

three candy snacks a day. Avoid this problem by

not having them at your school at all. No way,

Jose!

Sports drinks: It’s easy to get it slightly

wrong when it comes to sports drinks.

Due to their use as vitamin and mineral

replenishment for athletes, we associate

them with health. However,

they’re also loaded with sugars and

salt. Because of this, sports drinks

are no good for drinking with meals

or during breaks. The electrolytes and carbohydrates make them

great for intense exercise, however, and are highly recommended

for use during intense workouts to keep kids hydrated. Yes, at the

right time.

High-energy bars: These “healthy” snacks usually have a picture

of active, healthy people on the packaging. Must be healthy,

right? Not so fast. “Energy” doesn’t always mean “healthy.” In fact,

energy often means it contains a lot of calories, fat, and sugar. If

you’re going to give these snacks to your students, read the packages

before you buy and recognize the right time and place to

eat them: give your kids these energy bars only before an intense

workout, not after. Yes, in moderation.

Fruits: These are nature’s candy, full of unprocessed, natural

sugar, loaded with vitamins A, B6, and C. Not so fast! This is a

trick question! Always give your students prepackaged foods. It’s

unsafe for you and your students to give them anything for a snack

that isn’t prepackaged and sealed. If students bring their own

fruits, great, but unfortunately, they’re off-limits for you. No.

location, with one of the largest after school and summer camp programs in the country.

GROWTH HACKS

Heat Up Your School:

Summer Marketing Keywords

Every Martial Arts Business

Should Be Using (Part 2)

by Mr. Sean Lee

2. Facebook & Instagram Ad Copy Phrases

Use these in headlines and captions to drive clicks and

engagement:

• “Kick off summer with confidence!”

• “Beat the heat—train in the School!”

• “Summer special: Enroll today and get a free uniform!”

• “No screens, just skills. Try our summer martial arts camp!”

• “Spaces are filling fast for our 2025 Summer Camp!”

These emotionally driven and action-oriented phrases perform

well with parents scrolling through their feeds.

3. Email Subject Lines

Grab attention in crowded inboxes with these keyword-inspired

headers:

• “Don’t Miss Our Summer Karate Camp – Limited Spots!”

• “Keep Your Child Active This Summer with

Martial Arts”

• “New Summer Students Get a Free Week of

Classes!”

• “Is Your Child Ready to Kick Off the

Summer?”

Bonus: Keywords That Tap into Parent

Pain Points

In your copy, go beyond just the

martial arts angle—connect with

what parents are searching for emotionally

during the summer:

• Structured summer activities

• Screen-free summer ideas

• Safe summer camps near me

• Confidence-building programs for kids

• Discipline and focus for kids during summer break

When paired with martial arts terms, these pain-point keywords

help your business become the clear solution.

☑️ How to Use These Keywords Effectively

• On Your Website: Optimize landing pages and blog posts using

these seasonal keywords.

• In Paid Ads: Incorporate them into headlines and descriptions

on Google and Meta platforms.

• In Social Posts: Use hashtags like #SummerCamp2025,

#KarateSummer, or #ActiveKids2025.

• Email Campaigns: Test subject lines and preview text using

different keyword combos for higher open rates.

Final Thoughts

The best martial arts marketing strategies aren’t just about

technique—they’re about timing. By plugging summer-specific

keywords into your content and campaigns, you not only attract

more attention but also show up exactly when families are looking

for programs like yours.

So don’t wait for fall to ramp things up. Summer’s your season—

use the right words, and your School can stay packed from the first

day of June to the final days of August.

Need help building your summer campaigns? Reach out

for custom keyword strategies, ad copy ideas, or done-for-you

Facebook ad templates tailored for martial arts schools.

Let me know if you’d like this adapted into an email or landing

NINJA BUSINESS TACTICS

Always Question Ready To Go

by An-Shu Stephen Hayes

My habit is never to meet a knowledgeable teacher without having a good question in

mind, just in case I am given the opportunity to ask.

Rumiko and I traveled to the city of Tajimi municipal dojo for a

demonstration of Yagyu Shinkage Ryu sword by Mouri Keisuke

and his small group of students on the morning of September 11,

2011. As I walked in the dojo, my question that morning was, “Does

anybody still teach old style tachi battlefield sword technique, or

only stylized formal modern methods that make up sword training

in Japan today?”

What I learned in the 1970s as old-time

ninja combat methods and now teach in

our dojo as To-Shin Do seems so different

from what usually passes for Japanese

swordsmanship. Somehow, on the

10th anniversary of the unexpected

attack on New York City by suicide

stealth agents in airliner flying bombs,

the question of how old combat tactics

evolve into valuable new lessons

seemed appropriate. If we do not truly

understand the old ways, how can we

use their wisdom to build new effectiveness

today?

Amazingly, before I could

even ask my question,

Mouri Keisuke’s

demonstration

and explanation

started right

in with old

style tachi,

something

almost

never

seen

anymore.

His teaching plan for us began with the answer to my yet unspoken

question.

Rumiko and I were impressed that he had put together a program

and invited a newspaper reporter and significant business

friends to make an event out of it. Rumiko and I even got private

lessons from top teachers attending the seminar. So many times,

masters of ancient methods are not very adept at promoting the

value they offer the world, and too often languish in tiny training

halls where few can find their treasures. Some call that “being traditionally

reserved”. I often think of it as “being inept and unsophisticated”.

Mouri Keisuke was clearly a different sort of traditionalist.

How wonderful!

After training, ten of us walked to a soba noodle shop for lunch

and conversation on a day of 90 degree heat and intense sun.

Over lunch, the teacher asked me the probing question of why

the usual Bujinkan kamae was so often pictured with the front leg

extended too far out with the knee too straight. He was at ease

enough with our relationship to comment that he felt it was too difficult

to move quickly from such an over-wide stance.

I was very impressed that Mouri Sensei had apparently done

on-line research as to what I teach and what my original ninja

teacher and his students are teaching. I did my best to answer

carefully, without criticizing some of my teacher’s students for

either not knowing enough to teach well, or not caring enough and

just letting students do what they wanted without forcing proper

discipline on them. In the end, I gave a non-committal answer

suggesting there was a wide range of quality when it came to my

teacher’s students after my books had opened flood gates and his

dojo had become a huge international training hall operation.

At any rate I was impressed that he asked a probing question.

So many just sit in silence presuming to know things they actually

do not know. Maybe sword master Mouri Keisuke holds the same

view of always having a question ready as I do. An important lesson

for all who would be masters some day, huh?

EXTRAORDINARY MARKETING

Constructing Your

Marketing Parthenon (Part 1)

by Grandmaster Stephen Oliver

When it comes to marketing, the key is to be really good at all the tactics and the

individual pieces.

These are things needed to construct your “marketing parthenon.”

Whether it’s a live event, a webinar, a referral system, you

need to be really good at the tactics and elements. In the past,

I have organized some incredible events with loads of clients

coming in from far and wide, only for it to get cancelled due to a

tornado or something. The same can happen online, you can have

everything set up and ready to go, then the internet drops out and

cancels the entire thing. I’ve had marketing events that worked

incredibly the month prior, completely flop. Other times I’ve had

strategies far exceeding expectations.

However, if you have a lot of stuff going on and a load of different

events, then one or two things flopping won’t

hurt you as much. You are just losing one stream

of new clients rather than your only stream. You

should never be utterly dependent on one

single event, one single media, one single

strategy. Have a bunch of stuff going on all

of the time to create new client flow. Be consistent

and ongoing with your efforts.

In an ideal world, you have a palette of

prospects. You have people to choose from.

You can be selective. You can pick and

choose. This is why so many people

are really afraid of niching.

There is the feeling that you

need to go out and get absolutely

everyone you can get.

You can’t be afraid of really

targeting in and creating the

customers that will make

your business thrive, and the

customers you can confidently

provide a great service for.

You don’t want to run your practice out of a fear of scarcity.

You must operate with the expectation of abundance if you

want to be successful. An expectation of abundance is when you

expect there to be enough leads coming in, no matter what. How

you do that is by having enough things happening simultaneously,

that you are not dependent on any one process. Not only should

there be different things going on at the same time, but you also

need to make sure that each of your strategies is actually effective.

After all, there is no point in having ten sources of marketing

if none of them is actually working. Even if you are great at live

events, if your marketing is ineffective then none of the clients you

want will actually show up.

Out of the twenty or thirty different marketing things you can do,

as I explained earlier, you want to make sure that each and every

one is as effective as it can be. That way, you will feel good about

maintaining these twenty streams of marketing and will eventually

reap the rewards. So many people claim to have tried this and to

have tried that, claiming it does not work. The truth is, often it does

work and can work, you just missed the little pieces to complete

the jigsaw, little pieces that make all the difference in the world.

PILLARS OF SUCCESS

Stress for Success!

by Grandmaster Y. K. Kim

Turn stress attacks into success: A stress attack is emotional, mental, and physical

pressure. It is a part of our daily lives for survival and success.

Stress pressures us into achieving our goals, which means

success requires stress. On the other hand, if you don’t know how

to handle stress, it can be very dangerous in your life. As a matter

of fact, 80 percent of modern sicknesses, including cancer, heart

attacks, suicide, and many more, are stress-related. A buildup of

stress is like a deadly weapon or poison in your body.

When stress attacks: Emotionally, you will feel like there is

a rock on your chest; mentally, you will have a headache; and

physically, your body will be stiff. At this stage, if you don’t release

stress, you can’t think clearly, your body gets weak, you get sick,

and become negative and nasty to others. If you can defend

yourself from stress attacks, you can maximize your potential and

create a healthier future.

The Four Ways to be Stress Free!

a) Exercise and knock out stress.

Stress Attack: You think, “I am stressed out; I am

tired and feel like I will get sick.”

Defense: Exercise vigorously; it is the best way to

knock out stress and get in shape. Exercise will exorcise

all your toxins, loosen up your body, and you will

receive positive energy. Exercise will strengthen you

physically, mentally, and emotionally, so that you are

strong enough to handle any stress. Therefore, you can

turn any stress into energy.

Exercising is fun, exciting, and enjoyable.

Start today: Do not just exercise – Power

Exercise will strengthen your body and

mind and get you into shape. Enjoy the

rest of your life being stress free.

b) Find “Why & How” and blow

away stress.

You can handle most stress with

exercise, but some stress comes back

right away and attacks you. For example,

if you are having financial pressure or relationship problems.

Stress Attack: You think, “I am stressed out; I have no energy

and I am too tired.”

Defense: You need to find the problem by asking, “Why?” and

solve it by asking, “How?” Put your solution into action and never

give up until you make things happen. Therefore, you can turn any

heavy stress into a positive and energetic feeling.

If you follow this method, you will be smarter, wiser, more confident,

and proud of yourself. This process will help you create a

successful future.

c) Find the right person and kick out stress.

In some cases, you can justify that you are right with a friend.

For example, when you get criticized, you feel beaten. Justifying

yourself is the practical way to discharge your stress and enjoy

your life. However, if you choose the wrong person, he or she will

give you more stress. Therefore, you need to build reliable relationships

with people who have wisdom and confidence.

Stress Attack: You think, “I am stressed out; I feel stiff and I

have a headache.”

Defense: You choose the right person who has wisdom and

confidence. You talk to him or her about your problems, and after

you talk, you are stress free and you feel fantastic.

If you can build reliable relationships with people who have

wisdom and confidence, your life will be much easier and better.

d) Focus on positive goals and melt away stress

Positive goals bring positive energy; they will melt down stress

because you will be stronger than stress. For example, if you won

the 10 million dollar lottery jackpot, and while on your way to the

lottery office, someone flips you off . . . you don’t care because

when you get to the office, you will get your 10 million dollars.

Stress Attack: You think, “I am stressed out; I feel sad and

depressed.”

Defense: Keep your positive goals alive and focus on those

goals. It will melt away your stress, and you will feel energized again.

Follow this method; you can easily turn stress into success!

STAFF DEVELOPMENT

The Importance of Protocol (Part 1)

by Grandmaster Zufi Ahmed

In the BUSHI BAN organization, protocol is not just a set of rules to be followed but

a foundational pillar that upholds the culture, tradition, and values of the system. As

instructors and leaders within this martial arts organization, it is essential to understand

the significance, value, and impact of practicing and implementing the correct

protocols, both on and off the mat, inside and outside the dojo.

The Foundation of Modern Martial Arts: History,

Tradition, and Protocol

Modern martial arts are deeply entrenched in a rich history

and tradition, which have been passed down through generations.

These traditions are not mere formalities; they are the bedrock

that enriches, maintains, and preserves

the culture of our system. Protocols,

customs, and cultural practices serve

as a link to the past, ensuring that

the essence of martial arts remains

intact and continues to flourish in

the present day.

For instructors, understanding

and adhering to these protocols is

imperative. Even if one does not fully

understand, appreciate, or personally

like certain protocols, they must still be

observed. This adherence is not optional;

it is a requirement of being part of

the BUSHI BAN organization.

By following these protocols,

we honor the legacy

of those who came before

us and contribute to the

continuity of our martial

arts heritage.

The Warrior’s Code: Discipline and Hierarchy

The term “martial” in martial arts is derived from the Latin

word “Martialis,” which refers to military or warlike. This connection

is not coincidental; martial arts, like the military, are

rooted in a code of ethics, discipline, and hierarchy. In the

military, protocols and traditions are essential for maintaining

order, discipline, and effective operation. Without these structures,

the military would fail to function efficiently.

Similarly, in martial arts, the need for observing proper protocols

is embedded in the culture. The warrior’s mindset—characterized

by discipline, focus, respect, confidence and Courage—

is cultivated through a structured environment where rules and

protocols are diligently practiced. These practices are not just

about following orders; they are about building strong, successful

students who embody the virtues of the martial artist.

People are drawn to martial arts because they seek structure,

discipline, and a sense of purpose. By upholding the protocols

of the BUSHI BAN organization, instructors play a crucial role in

providing this structure, which in turn helps students develop

the traits of a warrior. In this way, the protocols serve as a guide

to personal growth and the development of a strong character.

GRANDMASTER ZULFI AHMED has amassed acclaim as a world-class competitor, martial

arts educator, and is most notably founder and designer of the internationally renowned style, Bushi Ban.

With over 45 years of martial arts experience and over 300 martial arts awards, his schools include ten

locations across Texas.

THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI

Zanshin - Eight Directions of

Awareness (Part 7)

by Shihan Dana Abbott

The second attacker was just a couple of paces behind the first one and farther to the

left. He was slightly more prepared as he advanced with his sword bobbing up and

down in unison with his gait. Witnessing his comrade’s demise, he had lost his focus,

which instantly created an opportunity for you to move in closer than he anticipated.

As his sword surges upward, you thrust your blade into his

chest between his raised arm and pectoral muscle. This slowed

him down immensely and he came to an immediate stop with

your blade still embedded in his upper chest. Continuing, you

start extracting the sword from its human sheath

as your eyes quickly search out the last

attacker who is so near at only two spear

lengths away. He is now mid-step of his

hasty retreat, his sword frantically wavering

back and forth.

At this stage you

realize you cannot

lunge since you

also would slip on

the bloodied ground.

Instead, without thought

or hesitation you take

several quick short paces

towards him setting up your

own attack. You have

begun to sense his

weakness and the

closer you advance

the weaker his

demeanor appears. His

attempted strike is immediately

parried by

you creating an opening in which your blade severs his thumb

from his sword wielding hand. Before his digit hits the ground,

your blade is again in action bearing down on his neck as you

both glare into each other’s eyes. He bends backwards to avoid

the pressure of your blade as it penetrates his neck, severing an

artery. He then slumps to the ground as you move away viewing

the three attackers lying in their blood impregnating the dirt. You

scan the immediate area for others ready and if need be…poised

to kill three more!

When you sense there are no more you take a deep breath,

relax and immediately feel the cool rush of the wind on your face,

glad to be alive. You relish this moment basking in nature, but reality

brings you back to the present standing above three groaning

bodies. You are grateful that their screams did not bring others

to their aid as you quickly walk back towards the safety of your

encampment”.

Abe Sensei then said, “Did you visualize yourself in the midst

of it all running and posturing, setting up for your attack, strong

mindset and focus, plus who to attack first or last? All the basic

elements of Zanshin such as, posturing, perception, engagement,

distance, focus and connecting energy are evident and present in

this scenario. Go back in your mind relive my story tracing every

step, technique, transition and follow through. Practice these techniques

again and again until you can better recognize Zanshin in

action using your eight directions of awareness”.

As a side note: I want to emphasize that this is how I was introduced

to Zanshin.

SHIHAN DANA ABBOTT Is a 7th degree black belt in Kenjutsu, starting his 14-year education in Tokyo. He has

published five books and designed a US Patent. Abbott has also conducted seminars in over 30 countries and obtained

his black belt at the Hombu dojo in Yokohama. He currently offers online classes on LearntheSword.com, his unique

The Power of Experience: How

Outside Events Shape the

Martial Artist Within (Part 1)

by Grandmaster Lawrence Arthur

There’s a saying in our schools: “Belts are earned on the floor—but character is

revealed in the journey.”

As martial artists and instructors, our mission goes far beyond

teaching technique. We are mentors, guides, and shapers

of human potential. Every block, every stance, every kata we

teach is ultimately in service of one goal: to develop the person

inside the uniform.

And that is why I believe—wholeheartedly—that

every martial arts student should

experience outside training opportunities: retreats,

seminars, tournaments, and specialty

camps. These experiences are not just about

recognition or competition. They are transformational.

They accelerate maturity. They build

confidence. And they challenge students

to live the very principles we teach.

If your goal is to cultivate

leaders, not just black belts—

this is where the real work

begins.

Here’s why:

1. Personal Growth

Begins at the Edge

of Comfort

When students

step outside their

familiar environment,

they begin to

grow. Whether it’s performing in front of new faces, training

with elite instructors, or facing off in a tournament—they’re

being stretched.

And in that stretch, they find strength they didn’t know

they had.

Outside events demand courage. They require adaptability.

They awaken the warrior within.

2. The Confidence That Comes from Challenge

Confidence is not given. It’s earned—through effort, failure, and

overcoming.

When a student competes, travels, or tests at an unfamiliar

event, they face fear. They face nerves. They face self-doubt. And

when they rise above those emotions, they return taller—not just

physically, but in spirit.

No belt can substitute for the kind of growth that comes from

pushing through uncertainty.

3. Exposure Creates Awareness and Humility

There is power in seeing how vast the martial arts world truly is.

When students train with other instructors or meet martial artists

from around the country, they gain new respect for the arts—and

for their own journey.

More importantly, they return with a deeper appreciation for

their school, their teachers, and the guidance they’ve received.

Gratitude is born in perspective.

NEXT LEVEL STRATEGY

The Art of Exceptionalism

by Shihan Allie Alberigo

I know at times I make up words or improperly string words together to make a point.

However, in my opinion this would be a great word. How does one go from mediocre

to exceptional? How does one take on the journey of becoming amazing? How does

one celebrate the quest to be exceptional or live the life of their dreams on a daily

basis? Exceptional-ism is a choice and a life-style!

In the 21st Century we have become used to the thought that

if this doesn’t work, I will just do the other thing instead. We are

inundated with choices and options for our children and ourselves

so if one thing doesn’t work out, we move on to the next. This

goes against all I was taught as a child. Remember the old saying,

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” Well, that saying has

been replaced with “if at first you don’t succeed, try again, and

if that doesn’t work or it is too hard, or inconvenient, we will find

something else and quit the thing that is giving you a difficult time.”

In the 21st century most parents and adults are searching for that

one thing that hits every point on their checklist. It excites, motivates

and you are good at it. Well, 99.9% of the time, this is not really going

to happen. If you are lucky, maybe you find the activity on the first try

and stick with it. However, the reality is, we continually search for our

children or ourselves to shine in the activity that is best

for them.

The age old saying is, you can polish a dull,

ugly stone and with enough polishing it becomes

a beautiful work of art, possibly even a

diamond in the rough or a gem. The theory of

practice makes perfect, is true. We have a saying

in the martial arts - fall down 9 times, get up

ten. Basically it implies don’t quit, don’t give

up, don’t give in. The real thought behind

the sayings is simple, if you want

something or as parents you want

things for your child, then DO

NOT let them quit. You may

want to refer to my other

blog post “I quit!” or “Mom, I want to quit, will you quit with me?”

I have also heard hundreds if not thousands of times parents tell

me, “we don’t want to force our child.” I know for a fact this is simply

not true, because you force your children to do things all the time.

What if your child didn’t want to go to bed on time or brush their

teeth, would you allow it? The answer is, NO! So the real question

is why do you say you don’t want to force them to do something.

The real true answer is you aren’t sure if this is worth pushing or

forcing or arguing with them over. That leads to the old defeatist

statement – We choose our battles wisely. I know this is true for

some, but the reality is, you know what is right for your child and

what their future will hold if you force, encourage and stay consistent

with an activity you will see and achieve unimaginable results.

If I had a dollar for every person that heard my speech and didn’t

listen I would be a millionaire. However, I also have heard those that

did take my words of advice, stood tall and held their ground. They

have come back to me with praise and accolades on why it was the

best choice they ever made.

Exceptional-ism is forged on consistency and practice, going

through trials, tribulations, failure and success is all part of the

journey. A student only becomes exceptional if you put the time in

or you push the envelope for them. Remember, they are not aware

and do not have the knowledge you have to make decisions. That

is why it is called coaching or parenting. I have taught martial arts

for over 35 years. I have taught 10’s of thousands of students in my

martial art school. I have taught all over the world and have even

coached thousands of martial art school owners and teachers. My

goal is to encourage you to stop searching and simply stick with

your activity and become amazing and become EXCEPTIONAL.

Public Speaking for Martial

Artists: Building the Next

Generation of Communicators

and Leaders (Part 2)

by Grandmaster Jessie Bowen

Developing Confidence as a Speaker

I created the course Speak with Confidence and authored the

book Public Speaking for Artists to address the gap in communication

skills among martial arts professionals. Here are three key

strategies from my teachings to help you become a more effective

speaker:

1. Know Your Audience

Understand the needs, concerns, and goals of those you are

addressing. Parents want to know how your program will help

their child develop discipline and confidence. Students look for

inspiration and clear instructions. Tailoring your message to your

audience ensures it resonates and drives action.

2. Practice Clarity and Simplicity

Martial arts concepts can sometimes be complex.

Break them down into simple, digestible

pieces. Avoid jargon or overly technical terms,

especially when speaking to beginners or

parents unfamiliar with martial arts.

3. Develop a Powerful Presence

Your body language, tone of voice,

and energy all contribute to

your effectiveness as a

communicator. Walk onto

the mat with confidence,

maintain eye contact,

and speak with enthusiasm.

A commanding

presence inspires trust

and respect.

Preparing the Next Generation

As martial artists, we don’t just teach self-defense; we cultivate

future leaders. By mastering the art of communication, we

empower our students to apply these skills to their lives—whether

in school, at work, or in their communities.

Public speaking is not just for seminars or competitions; it is

an integral part of running a successful martial arts school. When

you commit to becoming a better communicator, you elevate your

program, attract more students, and ensure the longevity of your

martial arts legacy.

Remember, leadership begins with your words. Speak with

confidence, inspire with purpose, and lead with passion. Together,

we can build a new generation of martial artists who are not just

fighters but also effective communicators and leaders.

American Martial Arts Association Sport Karate League and Hall of Fame, and has been a member of the Duke University

PE Staff for over 25 years. He is the author of Zen Mind-Body Mindfulness Meditation and Zen Mind-Body Mindfulness

Meditation for Martial Arts, as well as several other books, programs, and audio CDs on meditation and success training.

INSTRUCTIONAL EXCELLENCE

Meta-Programs and Your

Martial Arts School

by Grandmaster Tim McCarthy

This issue I want to embark on a series exploring Meta-Programs and how

understanding them can improve your martial arts school.

What are Meta-Programs?

Meta-Programs are the programs we use above and behind

our conscious thought patterns and decisions. They are thinking

patterns or perceptual filters that influence what we pay attention

to, what motivates us, what we respond to, how we interact with

people. They are on a different level than the thinking patterns that

might be called strategies, which we use consciously to deal with

everyday situations. Meta-Programs work behind the scenes, usually

unconsciously, to control and influence the information we use

in our everyday strategies.

They were brought into popular culture by Anthony Robbins,

as he popularized some of the principles of NLP

(Neuro-Linguistic Programming) as a way to improve

performance in many different fields. When you understand

Meta-Programs, you will be able to quickly

assess what motivates your students, your staff, and

your prospective students so that you can communicate

better with them in an efficient and effective way.

A Common Problem

Unfortunately, most people judge others

based on themselves – including martial

arts professionals. We believe other

people think the way we think. We look at

what motivates us, and believe the same

things will motivate others. These beliefs

are often mistaken: Some people,

perhaps even many people, think and

feel the way we do, but not everyone.

It’s as faulty as thinking that my

glasses will help you see as clearly

with them as I do. Everyone realizes that your eyes are different

than mine, so if you need glasses, you probably need a different

prescription and different glasses than I do. Likewise, your brain,

specifically your Meta-Programs, are different from mine, so you

“see” or understand things differently than I do. As I said earlier,

these Meta-Programs work behind the scenes (unconsciously), so

most of us aren’t aware of them, and that is why most of us judge

others based on ourselves and our own experiences.

The Solution

By understanding Meta-Programs, you can not only see

your own prejudices and shortcomings, you can also see those

prejudices and shortcomings in others so that you can help them.

Understanding Meta-Programs will make you a better teacher, a

better salesperson, and a better manager because you can individualize

the way you approach people for the maximum effect.

However, please understand that Meta-Programs are not

absolute; they are more like a spectrum with varying degrees and

gradations. For example, the Meta-Program describing Towards

vs. Away From orientation is not a black and white choice. People

do not move either toward or away from outcomes equally in all

situations. The Meta-Program is a generalization or guideline that

reveals tendencies, but can work differently in different situations,

depending on where you are and whom you are with. This

understanding not only helps you relate to the person you are

dealing with, it helps you understand that you can change the

Meta-Programs in your students and staff to help them with their

motivation and in achieving their goals. If they can learn to change

their Meta-Programs to be different in your school, perhaps they

can also be different in their life outside the school. Isn’t that the

goal of running a martial arts school?

BUDO PHILOSOPHY

Consistency and Convenience,

Loose Morals

by Shidoshi Alfredo Tucci

“Two can play that game, so it’s better to keep quiet.” – Proverb

“When the hare jumps away, there’s no cripple greyhounds.”

– Proverb

“I am not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you

are not in this world to live up to mine.”

– Bruce Lee

“He who knows all the answers has not been asked all the

questions.”

– Confucius

As years go by, we become more and more

tolerant (more understanding, if you so wish)

with our own and others’ faults. This doesn’t

seem to be the result of a virtue, less than

that of the lack of forces themselves, that

deficiency which, in positive terms, we

kindly see as the preamble of prudence.

“The fewer hassle, the merrier!” you

seem to be telling yourself.

“Why should I get into that garden full of

thistles?” you reflect.

But you’re actually inhibiting yourself

because you know just as well that

confronting or generating conflicts

is something that, although you

might know the way they start,

you certainly ignore how they

will end.

As a known lawyer used to

say, “Agreement is always better

because litigating is throwing

the dice in the sky.”

Over the years, as a result

of the knowledge of myself

and others, my vision of

coherence is much more

relaxed, flexible, and adaptable. I’ve seen and understood how

people, cultures, and religions have “diverted the fish into their

own hands” as many times as necessary to amalgamate coherence

and convenience. Because once into it, everything can

have an explanation—a “but,” an “it’s only that,” or a “what if”—

emerging from nothing so that everything happens and fits at the

right time.

Given that it’s wealth, the pecuniary, which concentrates the

general intentions in this plane, suffice it to touch Caesar what is

Caesar’s for him to bring to light the embarrassments and justifications

of anybody.

And, in all modesty, I am not a paragon of virtue (nor am I

among the worst), but despite the many flaws that I may have, addiction

to the vile metal has never been one of my most significant

weaknesses.

Of course, I value the importance of money, but for me, it has

been but a means and, certainly, it has never represented an end

in itself.

However, I’ve observed and consider good that the chrematistic

thing is able to bring out in a jiffy our personal miseries

even in “the best of every house.” Each person and each culture

sees the world from their own well ledge, like the frog of the

tale, and simply talking for talk’s sake, they tell what is best for

them, immaculate as they feel in their “coherence,” which, of

course, to the ears and the eyes of anybody, is and will ever be

but an absurdity.

That has no relevance whatsoever as long as the accounts

are squared out and everybody can express their personal

opinions to their liking. Frogs splash around happily in their

own well, and it’s unusual for any of them to risk going out of

their waters. Even among the bravest and most seasoned ones,

it soon appears the urgency to return to the sheepfold, since

they prefer to stay in known waters than venture into unknown

new wells.

COMPLETE MARTIAL ARTS CONCEPTS

The Killer Instinct

by Professor Willie “The Bam” Johnson

Today, the American streets are getting worse and not safer with the increasing drug

problem, threats and just so much anger and technique.

This state of mind that many people are in is often described

as the mysterious illusion psychological edge called the “killer

instinct.” Probably every instructor in America would tell you that

without time “Killer instinct” it is impossible to survive on the

streets today. If you don’t have it, you think you might die in the

end of some desperate drug user weapon.

The killer instinct in sports karate or more last in the system of

wushu, and this may be true. But, to me a system is just a tool to

bring such mental displays. When I began to undergo the training

of the martial arts at age six it was based on natural instinct and

survival skills for the rough and rough ghetto streets. Then at age

15 when I finally received my black belt I had just begun to realize

what I had brought to the martial arts and after being recognized

as one of the best American’s to train in China in 1998 by the top

masters there.

It was at this point that I really began to realize what

I had to contribute to the arts and that is my service

will to or you can call it the “Killer Instinct.” When I

am in competition the “killer instinct” is displayed or

some call it my will to win, so from my life experiences

on to the deadly ghetto streets, I have been

able to help my students express such a form

of mind and a friendly atmosphere.

You see, in my street combat

program we had to develop a level

that helps a student beyond the

focus and develop this apathy.

What we would like to show you

here are a few techniques that

express this approach but the

bottom. If you are insecure from

within you miss this message because

it only insecure people that

have to prove themselves. We

all go through this development

stage but should outgrow it and begin to combat the inner emotion

of pride, revenge, arrogance and judgment.

The “Killer Instinct” In The Streets

If you are born and raised in any of the American ghettos, the

survival instinct is something you will eventually learn to express

and many of the kids growing up today see people being killed

over drugs or owning their own guns in order to survive.

For people that choose to lead a positive lifestyle they have to

take this into deep consideration because if we don’t want to go to

jail or die but if we are reassured to fight then these are possibilities

as well. I don’t care if you are a great puncher, kicker, grappler,

or whatever the thing is, it is that most of these attackers are on

the same level mentally and physically they just choose to take

responsibility for their crimes. These guys also pray and believe

in God in their own way, it’s shocking to see how these attackers

react when they’re caught and accused of brutal crimes. They feel

great. It’s okay because their friends are in jail and life is about the

same inside to them. They train with weights, martial arts, boxing

and wrestling in jail.

Most of them are in better shape than the average martial artist.

I was there for 9 months, and when I came home I reached higher

goals than before on a positive level.

There are no gimmicks or tricks, just universal truth about survival

on the streets. So I’m not teaching a Chinese art, an African

art or Japanese art but reality. It’s a reality that I will die for today in

order to avoid reliving his past. A past that started as a kid growing

up to the sound of sirens and gunshots in the night and the sight of

blood on the sidewalk.

I have taken my experiences in an uncontrolled environment

and structured it in a controlled manner in order to expose others

to it. It’s important that we keep the structure of martial arts in its

right place, which is to develop control over our behaviors, if we

don’t and just continue to push the principle of physical encounters,

we stay part of the problem and not part of the solution to it.

PROFESSOR WILLIE “THE BAM” JOHNSON is a 7th degree black belt and seven-time sport

karate and Kung-Fu world champion. He has appeared in four movies, 16 plays, and 11 television shows. He is also

the national spokesperson for the Stronger than Drugs Foundation and the Champions Against Drugs.

MASTER THE BASICS

Leading by Example

by Master Tina Bane

Your most important skill as a school owner is your leadership ability.

Nobody can run a successful martial arts business by themselves.

Your ability to get the most out of others is a crucial component

to the success of your school. Plus, your leadership role is

twofold: with your staff and with your students. Taking an active

leadership role requires a combination of different skills, and one

of the most important is being able to lead by example. It’s one

thing to tell your students and staff what to do, but it’s something

else entirely to model for them exactly what you expect from them

to make the most out of your school, and to maximize their own

strengths. There’s no better way to help your school excel than by

taking action and showing your staff and students how to do the

same! Here are three ways that you can lead by example:

Give 110%. There’s a commonly used saying: “Never

let them see you sweat.” As far as leadership

goes, that may not be the best advice. When

you’re the one giving out orders, people

want to know that you have some experience

behind your words. If you say your

staff and students need to work harder, they

want to see it with their own eyes. So it’s extremely

important that you work as hard,

or harder, than your staff and students

to get your message across.

That translates into all areas:

running your school, teaching

your students, and in your

own personal martial

arts training. Your

students and

staff will respect

your effort,

and your energy

will inspire

those around

you to give a little

more every day.

Correct your mistakes.

Another important aspect of

leading by example is humility. No matter how hard you’re working,

you’ll still make mistakes from time to time. While your job

is difficult, your staff and students don’t necessarily understand

everything that goes into running your school. They may look more

toward the things they think you’re doing wrong than the things

you’re doing right as justification for their own weaknesses. This

is human nature, but you can control the culture of your school by

owning up to your mistakes and making an effort to improve them.

When your students and staff see you doing this, they won’t have

justifications for their own behavior, and they’ll have a blueprint for

self-improvement to follow.

Honor your word. Lastly, leading by example means being loyal

to your students and staff, and standing by your decisions. That’s

not to say you won’t ever change your mind, but staying consistent

helps give your instructions more weight. Everybody needs discipline

to stay on target to achieve their goals, and sticking by your

decisions is key to keeping your staff and especially your students

on target. On the other hand, you want to honor your word by

standing by promises you make to your staff and students. Reward

them when you say you will. Stand up for them when you know

they’re right.

These efforts will increase your staff and students’ already high

esteem for you and create the kind of leadership that takes your

school to a whole new level!

INNOVATION

Using Affirmations and

Meditation in Martial Arts

Training for Young Students (Part 2)

By Dan Segarra

Guided Inner Journeys

In addition to affirmations, guided inner journeys can help children

engage more deeply in meditation. These journeys are short,

imaginative narratives that lead students through a calming mental

landscape. For instance, you might ask them to visualize themselves

as warriors in a serene garden, practicing their moves with

precision and focus. This narrative helps to capture their imagination

and makes the experience of meditation more engaging and

less daunting.

Implementing Affirmations and Meditation

To successfully integrate affirmations and meditation into martial

arts training, consider the following steps:

1. Consistency: Use affirmations at the start and end of

each class. Consistency helps reinforce the messages

and makes them a natural part of the students’ routine.

2. Engagement: Encourage students to participate

actively in reciting affirmations. This active

involvement helps them internalize the messages

more effectively.

3. Visualization: Use guided inner journeys to

make meditation more accessible and enjoyable.

Tailor the narratives to the age and interests of

your students.

4. Reflection: After each meditation

session, give students a

moment to share their experiences

or thoughts. This reflection

can help reinforce

the benefits of the practice

and encourage them to

apply these lessons in their

daily lives.

The Benefits of Affirmations and Meditation

Incorporating affirmations and meditation into martial arts training

offers numerous benefits:

• Improved Focus: Regular practice helps students develop the

ability to concentrate and stay present.

• Enhanced Self-Esteem: Positive affirmations build confidence

and self-worth.

• Stress Relief: Meditation provides a tool for managing stress

and anxiety.

• Discipline: The practice reinforces the discipline required for

both martial arts and everyday challenges.

• Positive Mindset: Affirmations cultivate a positive outlook, helping

students approach life with optimism and resilience.

Conclusion

As instructors

we believe

that martial arts

training is about

more than just

physical prowess.

By integrating

affirmations and

meditation, we

help our students

develop the mental

and emotional

strength they

need to succeed in all areas of life. With affirmations like “My future

is a treasure, my efforts the key,” and “My mind is a garden, my

thoughts are like seeds,” our students learn to harness the power

of positive thinking and mindfulness, setting them on a path to

becoming masters of both martial arts and life.

MASTER DAN SEGARRA is a 9th Degree Black Belt who is a world renown and respected authority and one of

the highest rank Americans in the Korean Martial Arts. He has a very innovative mind when it comes to curriculum and school

MARTIAL ARTS PHILOSOPHY

The Enjoyment of Bare-Knuckle

Fighting (Part 2)

By Sensei Gary Lee

I hated the gloves and safety gear—or “protective equipment” as it was called back

then. It limited pure technique.

I vividly remember complaining to my first instructor in the U.S.

about this equipment. Finally, he got tired of my fussing and said,

“Gary, I tell you what. Every time you knock the wind out of someone,

land a solid hit, or knock them down while wearing the gear,

I’ll put a notch on your glove. And for every five notches, I’ll buy

you dinner. But no blood, okay?”

By the time I left him, I had 17 notches on that glove.

Still, I hated wearing them. For example, I wore a size 10 shoe

but bought a size 8 safety boot so my foot would be partially

exposed, especially the blade for sidekicks and the heel for back

kicks. I know you can still execute proper kicks with the right size

boot, but it was a mental thing for me. The same went for gloves—I

intentionally bought smaller ones.

When I fought, I’d wrap my hands in duct tape, then boxing

wraps, and finally put on the safety gloves. It became

a ritual, part of my mindset for fighting

in Texas tournaments. It wasn’t about trophies,

fame, ratings, or magazine articles.

It wasn’t even about the $25 prizes (a

laughable amount, considering promoters

back then made around $5,000 per

event if they were smart). My mindset was

simple: I could hit people repeatedly without

getting arrested.

In the early ’70s, Roy Kurban

stepped up to produce an

“A”-rated Karate Illustrated

Magazine event called

the Fort Worth Pro-Am.

He broke the mold

by offering cash

prizes for 1st

through 5th place in Black Belt divisions, along with trophies and

top points in Karate Illustrated. He even implemented a revolutionary

new rule: fighters would earn TWO POINTS for any kick to a

legal target area.

In Texas, the groin was a legal target—a taboo in many other

parts of the country. This “two-point rule” was too enticing for

great fighters across the U.S. to resist. The event grew bigger

every year. Eventually, two-point kicks became standard in tournaments

nationwide and then worldwide.

The two-point kick was a game changer. It motivated fighters

and rewarded the skill and precision required to be a true Black

Belt point fighter.

Maybe gear wasn’t so bad after all. Head kickers loved it. Groin

kickers thrived on it. With any kick to a legal target, fighters would

lift their leg and—whap—two points. Matches could be won in

under a minute, and the first person to five points claimed victory.

It changed the game forever.

SENSEI GARY LEE, the American Samurai, is a 9th Dan black belt, a USA Karate

Federation gold medalist, winner of five Super Grand National Titles, a featured actor in

the movie Sidekicks, and is the founder of the National Sport Karate Museum.

MANAGEMENT EXCELLENCE

Two Ingredients for

Quality Staff Meetings

by Grandmaster Kirk Pelt

Quality builds quality

Staff meetings make organizations stronger. When done

properly, they foster communication, ideas, and growth. The key

is to make them stronger by making them higher quality. Two

ingredients to make staff meetings more effective and stronger are

preparation and participation.

Preparation is critical before having any staff meeting. It keeps

you and your team focused. Take time to define the purpose and objectives.

Write down and print up an agenda, send out an announcement,

and make facility and equipment arrangements. If

there are facts and figures to discuss, it means doing

your homework and being prepared for suggestions.

Also, prepare a time limit so that you know

when to end a meeting. Remember, part of preparation

is to know when to end the meeting.

Participation is important during any staff

meeting. It’s crucial that everyone participates,

even if it’s simply paying attention to the topics

being discussed. If you’re running the meeting,

it’s important that staff is encouraged to contribute

and participate. Always be ready to tighten the

reins and move the discussion forward. It’s

a continuous balancing act: facilitating

and controlling, opening up and

tightening down, with a series of

decision points along the way.

Now that we’ve covered how

to make staff meetings stronger

by preparation and participation,

here’s a list of staff meetings

you’ll end up having if you

haven’t prepared and aren’t

encouraging participation:

Boring, rote weekly

staff meetings: These

are overly predictable meetings, or staff meetings just to have

staff meetings. They’re characterized by apathy and aggravation.

Although staff meetings are best for an organization when held

weekly, if you must have a weekly meeting, make it straight and to

the point.

Meetings without agendas: These types of meetings are poorly

planned meetings with no clear purpose. They’re often unfocused

and a waste of time. They’re meetings that never cover necessary

information. These types of meetings are unfocused and frustrating

to everyone.

Gripe sessions: Meeting in which everyone vents but nothing

is accomplished. When problems arise, there must be an attempt

at a solution—otherwise, why meet? Solve problems at your staff

meetings or everyone walks away empty handed.

Weak leadership and/or poor meeting facilitation: A meeting

needs a leader. Someone must run or facilitate the meeting or it

goes nowhere.

Staff meetings are a necessity in the martial arts business to

keep your staff motivated and successful. Make your staff meetings

effective with preparation and participation. Those two simple keys

will make your staff meetings an easy win-win situation for everyone!

GRANDMASTER KIRK PELT is an 8th degree black belt and is the President of a multi-million

dollar, multi-school organization, has a 30-year track record of success, and is currently on the leading

edge of martial arts curriculum and business innovation.

THE WARRIOR WAY

Confidence: Increase

Your Options (Part 3)

by Grandmaster Bill Clark

The fourth factor in building confidence, and the most important one, is creating

options for yourself. The control you have over events, and therefore, the confidence

you have, is in direct proportion to your well-developed options.

Things that we perceive to be beyond our

control cause stress and worry; if the problems

we face are easily within our sphere of control,

we rarely feel insecure. We are, instead, brimming

with confidence.

Your confidence in any major decision, such

as changing jobs, moving to another state,

getting a divorce, buying a business,

or firing a key employee, will always

rest on one factor: The quality of

your well-developed options. It’s

much easier to yell, “Take this job

and shove it!” when you have six

months’ income in reserve at the

bank. It’s much easier to

fire a key employee if you have two or

three more qualified people you

know can adequately replace

him.

Options increase your

courage and confidence

dramatically.

Always be on the

lookout for options.

You can both find them

and create them. The

more options you have,

the less chance of you

being boxed into a

situation from which you feel you have no escape. Most Americans

live from paycheck to paycheck, and I suspect that people all over

the world do the same. It’s hardly any wonder, then, that people

are always worried about their job, their company, and their health.

If any one of these things fails for more than a week, they will be in

desperate trouble. Free yourself from this form of anxiety.

Prepare for whatever problems might hurt you.

Save more money, buy catastrophic health insurance, put extra

canned food and water in storage, keep your job contacts active,

earn an MBA at night, and so on. Make whatever sacrifices are

necessary to give yourself options. It’s amazing the increase in

confidence you enjoy when you know, no matter what happens,

you have half a year to regroup and follow a different path.

TACTICAL SELF-DEFENSE

Sharpen Your Sense

By Grandmaster Tom Patire

In the last 10 plus years there has been a big push to teach knife fighting as it pertains

to situational defense as well as knife against knife.

Social media has certain ‘experts’ posting the concept that it’s

better to use a knife and be judged by twelve than not and to be

carried by six. That philosophy is also depending on the legal use

of an edge weapon especially if the person you are going against

is unarmed. Yes, I do agree that each situation of defense of

oneself or another person is dictated by the circumstance, so I am

not here to play judge or jury. What I am here for is to SHARPEN

YOUR SENSE!

I do agree that there is a place and time in any training

to learn all aspects of defense of oneself or defense of

another. That includes armed and unarmed when an

edge weapon would play a part. I also do agree

that it is legally easier to buy and care for a knife

or edge weapon (depending on legal size) plus it

is easy to conceal it. That also has a negative to it.

Concealed the wrong way is a hindering on how

to brandish when needed. Concealing where it is

in plain view may deter some but also gives away

the element of surprise. That’s where proper ‘edge

weapon’ training comes in.

This type of training is a must

to get certified by the right person

because whether you use

it in defense or you teach it to

you students, who taught you

will come to play should this

become a criminal and/or

civil matter. I have met and

trained with some talented

edge weapons instructors

in my time. Ones that

preached confrontational

avoidance over edge usage.

They, like me, believe that using any weapon is a last resort

option. Then, and only then, you use the weapon to incapacitate

and create an escape window unless life and death confronts you

like in an active shooter situation. I have been involved in several

situations where an edge weapon was used on a client and one

in particular that came out of a crowd and as I moved the client

to evaluate him, I was cut on the wrist. At the time I had no idea it

was an edge weapon because it was dark brown and looked like a

club, but I learned later on it had a sharp piece of metal attached to

it. Missed my radial artery by inches and I have the scar to prove it.

Now why I brought that situation up was because it was not

your normal edge weapon scenario. The attacker blended his

weapon to fit the environment, which was a protest, and because

it was brown the reflection of the sun did not give a telltale sign

that it was a bladed weapon. The negative to the positive is that it

allowed me to be a better instructor in teaching edge weapon defense.

To tell my trainees how effortless a sharp object can cut you,

and how doing an adrenaline-based scenario you don’t release

your even cut. It also increased my respect for an edge weapon

and allowed me to re-think my teachings into distancing and avoidance.

I live by the philosophy that things don’t happen the way you

think. Traditional weapons defense against a knife may work in a

perfect scenario but defense against erratic patterns and irrational

people is something that you need to avoid not engage. He who

runs today lives to run another day. Ego based people may not

agree with that philosophy but think about the damage a bladed

weapon can do in maiming or taking a life, whether that be yours

or someone else. So as instructors that represent a code and are

assets in your community SHARPEN YOUR SENSE and keep your

students safe by educating them about the streets and the laws

that govern them.

So, until next time - Remember Safety first because you may

not get a second chance!
